Trigger Squeeze: How to Avoid Jerking Your Shots

Mastering Your Pistol Trigger Squeeze

For pistol shooters, the trigger pull is the most important moment. You can have a perfect stance and great aim, but if you pull the trigger too fast, you will miss the center.

What is a Trigger Squeeze? A **Trigger Jerk** is a quick, sudden pull. This makes your wrist tilt slightly, causing your shot to land low.

A Trigger Squeeze is a slow, steady increase in pressure. You should pull so smoothly that the shot releases as a surprise.

The Dual-Stage Squeeze Most match pistols have double-stage triggers: 1. **First Stage (Pre-load):** Pull the trigger back gently until it stops at a firm wall. 2. **Second Stage (The Wall):** Once you feel the wall, add a tiny bit of steady pressure straight backward. 3. **Focus on the Front Sight:** Keep your eyes focused on the front sight blade, not the target. Let the target stay a bit blurry.

The Coin Balancing Drill To practice this, try this drill from our coaches: Place a small coin flat on top of your pistol barrel. Practice clicking the trigger. If the coin falls off or wobbles, your finger is moving too fast. Keep practicing until you can click it 20 times without the coin moving.

With smooth practice, your scores will become steadier and higher!
