Breathing for a Steady Shot: Tips from our Coaches
In competitive shooting, hitting a tiny target over 10 meters requires complete stillness. This is directly connected to how you breathe.
Why Breathing Matters Every breath you take moves your chest and shifts your rifle or pistol. If you pull the trigger while breathing normally, your shot will go off-target.
To prevent this, shooters use a simple technique called the Breathing Pause.
How to Breathe in 4 Simple Steps Don't hold your breath with full lungs. This makes your heart beat faster and makes your hands shake. Instead, try this rhythm: 1. **Take a Deep Breath:** As you lift your weapon, take a slow, deep breath to calm down. 2. **Exhale Halfway:** Slowly let out about half of the air. Let your body relax. 3. **Pause:** Stop breathing naturally for 8 to 10 seconds. Your body is now completely still. 4. **Shoot:** Aim at the target and smoothly squeeze the trigger.
The 10-Second Rule If you don't shoot within 10 seconds, your body will start to run out of oxygen, and your hands will shake. **The Rule:** If you take too long, lower the gun, take a few normal breaths, and try again.
Practice this breathing pattern, and you will see your scores improve!
